The concept of kalinisang puri (true love still waits) highlights the virtue of chastity, which, while many cases of unwanted pregnancy and STDs among teens show the decline of this virtue among the youth, is a relevant and effective expression of love.
The Value of Proper Courtship
In traditional Filipino culture, a male suitor is expected to approach a woman respectfully and modestly, as it is deeply rooted in tradition, family, and discretion. The value of proper Filipino courtship and respect for oneself and one’s partner is deeply embedded in the cultural fabric, emphasizing strong family ties, discretion, and mutual regard.
Common Practices
Harana (Serenade)
This is a very popular practice where young men sing to the woman they admire, often accompanied by friends and a guitar. The woman may respond by singing as well, in a musical exchange of messages.
Umakyat ng Ligaw (Courting the Family)
A man courts not just the woman but also her family. This involves visiting her home, often at night or on weekends, and bringing gifts for everyone.
Pamamanhikan (Formal Proposal)
If the courtship is successful and the couple wishes to marry, the man and his parents formally visit the woman’s parents to ask for her hand in marriage and seek their blessings.
Courtship in Modern Dating
While traditional practices remain influential, modern Filipino courtship has evolved, incorporating new technologies and more liberal approaches, though still retaining core values like family respect. Filipino dating culture today still emphasizes family involvement, with parents’ approval often sought before a serious relationship. Men are still expected to make the first move, whether in person or online.
The Sacred Bond of Marriage
Marriage is more than a romantic or legal union. It is a sacred and lifelong commitment guided by strong cultural and religious values.

Family Solidarity
Family is the foundation of social life for most Filipinos. Strong bonds connect not only the nuclear family but also extended family members, distant relatives, close neighbors, and friends. This view of family plays a key role in Filipino marital relationships. Marriage is seen as a union of two families, not just a partnership between two people.
